Back to overview
“A must stay if you are going to visit the part of Bali close to Ubud. Our family loved Stone House, it really hit all the right spots for us.  A stay feels more like a visit to an old friend's home, but with everything you could wish for a memorable family holiday at your disposal. The villas are beautifully designed, while at the same time you can see the environment has been considered as well.  The communal areas consisting of the pool, kitchen, dining, living and lounge have an abundance of places to relax and chill together, all the while never feeling crowded and very private. Wendy and her staff were wonderful and resourceful when it came to giving tips on where to go and what to do. The food that's being served for breakfast and dinner is simply mouthwatering and children will also love it!” MATTHIJS: INNOVATION MANAGER AT ING | WITH LEONNE | LOTTE (2004), NIKKI (2006) AND MATS (2008) | AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

Best for

  • Green mindset
  • Culture

Kids will love

  • Splashing in the pool. The pool is phenomenal and very large given the fact that there are just 3 villas. There are also great lounge chairs and communal spaces too chill
  • Eating banana pancakes for breakfast
  • Playing with the two extermely friendly dogs Lulla and Bella
  • Visiting the monkey forest
  • Taking a cycling tour off the beaten track with Sepeda Bali, set up by two brothers, Wayan en Ketut (can be booked via Stone House)
  • Go shopping in Ubud, known for their art galleries
  • Climbing Mt Batur, an active volcano, and view the steam vents, old lava flows and ancient cave

You'll love

  • The gorgeous view: most rooms have private decks off the bedroom which is situated among large jungle trees and overlooks a rice paddy
  • The lovely furniture made by Balinese and Javanese carpenters from recycled and sustainable Indonesian wood
  • Your morning swimm in the large pool carved from Javanese stone and surrounded by frangipani trees.
  • The luxurious linnens on your bed, antique treasures from travels to far-flung places and woven textiles thrown casually over sofas and chairs
  • A massage in the privacy of your own room
  • Taking yoga classes in Ubud (the staff of Stone House can organize it for you)

Good to know

  • Bali is in the tropics, therefore there are many natural sounds of geckos, crickets, roosters, ducks in the nearby rice paddies, the occasional dog barking and the sounds of village life. This is the real Bali. Please keep this in mind when deciding whether you want to stay at Stone House
  • Baby sitting can be arranged
  • There is no fence around the pool
  • They bring the breakfast to your villa or you can have breakfast in the common area. There’s no formal restaurant but chef Kadek cooks to order, and there are enough nice restaurants around the corner
  • You have enough privacy in your villa, your own terrace and at the pool - there is a common lobby where you can sit at one table with other guests
  • Toys, cots and a hand-made bamboo highchair are available, with woggles, balls and goggles provided for the pool. Wendy is a great resource for children-friendly activities in Ubud
  • You can also rent the whole property if you are with a large family of group or friends
  • Denpasar airport is a 60 min drive

In short

Stone House is close to the hustle and bustle of hectic Ubud, but far enough to enjoy some inner peace and quiet: relax on the porch swing and gaze over the paddy rice fields or cool down in the beautifully designed pool.  Stone House is an interior designers dream, yet also gives you the feeling of a staying at a good friend’s home. As such it is the perfect place for design afficianados, stylish people, traveling families and those looking for a more intimate hotel experience. Each of the villas has its own soul. Longhouse for instance is built completely on stilts and juts into the jungle and faces the rice fields. Sky view is perfect for families, a stone washed Mediteranean inspired villa with two bedrooms. Which ever villa you pick, you will find your villa scattered with antiques and treasures from the owners' own travels in Asia. Gorgeous, spacious and so comfortable and the bathrooms are special too. It is evident the owners - the American Walker Zabriskie and Wendy Kassel - have reallygiven thoughtful attention to every detail. Wendy provides charming service with her team, whereas Walker makes sure there is always some interesting new furniture object to see made of sustainable wood. Their daughter attends the Green School, which pioneers in sustainable education and there is never a lack of interesting visitors /friends at the Stone House.
